Originating from Burma, officially known as the Union of Myanmar, Lethwei also known as Burmese Boxing is similar to other southeast asian forms of fighting such as Muy Thai Kick Boxing from Thailand, Tomoi from Malaysia, Pradal Serey from Cambodia and Lao Boxing from Laos. Burma has a tradition of kickboxing that is told to date to the Bang and Pyu era. The oldest historical written references to the Lethwei fighting style can be found in the chronicles of warfare between Burma and Thailand around the 15 to 1600's.Rules are similar to Muay Thai (leg kicks, punches, knees and elbows) but combatants are allowed to strike with the head and all forms of takedowns are permitted, showcasing a few grapling and wrestling techniques from the martial art of Myanmar known as bando. Raking knuckle strikes are also practiced and performed to induce bleeding. Punches are the weakest of its arsenal, while wrecking massive damage and finishing blows with elbow strikes and knees thrust. A traditional match would go until a fighter could no longer continue, no draws, only a win or loss by knockout with no point system. Extreme bloodshed is normal and death in the ring is not out of the ordinary. In modern times, if a knockout occurs, the boxer is revived and has the option of continuing; as a result, defense, conditioning, and learning to absorb painful punishment are keys to mastering this art. Burmese boxers spend a great deal of time preparing the body to absorb impact and conditioning their bodily weapons to dish it out. Compared to pretty much all other forms of Boxing/kickboxing, Lethwei can easily be recognized as the rawest and most fierce with only true fighters with heart and bare knuckles are able to step into the sand pit or modern day ring.
